Application of Hermeneutic Philosophy in Nursing: focusing on Hans-Georg Gadamer
Kim Jae-Hyun

Abstract
Purpose: Philosophical tradition is important in nursing theory, nursing education, and nursing practice. Among philosophical traditions, Hans-Georg Gadamer's Hermeneutic philosophy is one of the best resources. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to identify and explain the Gadamer's hermeneutic philosophy in relation to nursing field.

Methods: Gadamer assigned new status to 'prejudice' (Vorurteil). He positively evaluated 'the gap of time' (Zeitenabstand) between text and interpreter, and emphasized that there was 'effective history' (Wirkungsgeschichte) between them. Gadamer also suggested that the fusion of horizon (horizontverschmelzung) between text and interpreter will enable to make an endless open conversation.

Results: Gadamer's hermeneutic philosophy can be applied to nursing research, nursing education, and nursing service. Gadamer hermeneutic offers assistance to cope with the paradigm of natural science and seek a human science of nursing or the hermeneutics of caring. Futhermore, it enables hermeneutic approach to nursing traditions. Gadamer's hermeneutical philosophy helps nursing educators to give a genuine dialogue of education. Hermeneutics of Gadamer can change nursing curriculum. It can lead the nursing education to the dimension of nursing-cultivation (Bildung). Gadamer's hermeneutics can give a helping hand to solve communication problems and to interpret clinical and interview records.

Conclusion: This paper researched the applicability of meta-theory in nursing science. Thus, it requires more specific theory for future research that can be applied in nursing theory, nursing education, and nursing service.
